Sixth-seeded App State saw its season draw to a close on Monday, falling to third-seeded Texas State 2-0 in the Sun Belt Tournament Quarterfinals at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex.
The Mountaineers (7-7-5, 4-3-3) conclude the season by posting seven wins, and doing so in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2015-2016. The team has also finished with a winning record in Sun Belt play in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2014-2015, its first years in the conference.
On a windy day in Foley, Ala., the Bobcats (11-4-5, 6-1-3) opened the scoring in the 24th minute of play. Mady Soumare dribbled the ball towards the top of the goal box, and after drawing the defense to her, was able to drop a pass off for Mya Ulloa who shot it into the bottom-left corner of the goal.
The Bobcats doubled their lead on a set piece in the 49th minute of play. Zoe Junior sent a free kick into the box and Soumare was able to come away with possession, sidestep a charging Sarah Wommack and put a shot into the back of the net.
Texas State out-shot App State 9-7 including 5-2 in shots on target. The Bobcats also held a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Izzi Wood, Ellie Garrison and Kyli Switalski each tallied a pair of shots, while Wommack registered three saves. Seven Mountaineers played all 90 minutes in the match.
